Who We Are

Women Against Terrorism (WAT)

Our Events

Promoting women as agents of peace recognizes their contributions to peacebuilding and prevention of violence and upholds respect for the human rights of everyone in areas afflicted by violent extremism.

The fight against terrorism and violent extremism is an all community fight that can only take everyone’s input to succeed. As the government security agencies enhance the war against fully blown terrorists, there are roles that must be played by the rest of the community in preventing it at the radicalization and recruitment level. Women are said to be the most affected

Why Women

Violent extremism, based on beliefs and actions of people that support and use violence to achieve ideological, religious and political goals, has gendered dimensions.

For this reason, there are varying consequences of violent extremism for women and girls compared to men and boys. Recent times have seen increased violent extremist activities around the world and these groups increasingly target women and women rights.

Deficiencies in governance and structural gender inequalities feed into the root causes of violent extremism exacerbating vulnerability to it.

The WAT program design seeks to promote this achievement by:

  • Enhancing the rights of women and girls in counter terrorism efforts with other stakeholders
  • Addressing the gaps in programs aimed towards reintegration of returnees into the society; (link to blog articles)
  • Advocating for integration of gender perspective into policy-making processes and in developing new legal instruments;
  • Advocate for increased women participation in security decision making processes especially in counter violent extremism. (WAT Roundtable discussions/events)
  • Promoting and accelerating the achievement of Agenda 2030 for sustainable development and SDGs 5, 10 and 16. (include SDG symbols)
