A roadside bomb explosion targeting a vehicle carrying a low-level government official has killed at least five civilians.
The explosion that was apparently targeting Deynile district secretary Mahad Sharawe, has also injured about a dozen others, including women and children.
According to the local police the bomb was placed near a busy market in Mogadishu, the capital of Somalia.
Mr. Sharawe has survived the attack but his bodyguard sustained light injuries.
A witness who spoke to the local media said he saw a mother carrying an infant who sustained a gruesome injury on her head.
“I saw a woman who had part of her skull blown off and blood trickling all over her body while her baby, still alive, was laying on top of her,” says the witness, adding “we called for help and immediately the injured were rushed to the hospital”.
Later a truck was brought to collect the dead bodies.
