It’s barely a month since the Al Shabaab militia (a terrorist group based in Somalia) attacked its own people in a Mogadishu restaurant, killing 10 Muslims and injuring scores of others. The 10 were killed after a rickshaw loaded with explosives was detonated by Al Shabaab militants at a popular restaurant in Mogadishu. In the same week, Al Shabaab executed 5 of their own people, including a 16-year-old teenager in the southern town of Jilib in Somalia’s Middle Juba region. Abdirahman Adan, a local official of the Jubaland administration in the state’s administrative capital Kismayo, told the press that the people executed by Al Shabaab were civilians. “It’s not the first time Al Shabaab terrorists have executed civilians, and they also forced the people of Jilib town to come out and watch the execution,” he said.

All these killings were borne of the fact that the Al Shabaab have been taking numerous losses from strategic attacks by US AFRICOM, AMISOM, and SNA troops. The terrorist group always resorts to attacking the poor helpless and marginalized communities of southern Somalia every time they take a devastating hit from the security agencies earlier mentioned. They aim to instill fear in their own people so they can lose hope and resign to being controlled by Al Shabaab. What leadership executes a 16-year-old and forces his family, neighbours, and town to look on?

This is a classic portrayal of Al Shabaab’s evil will towards the people of Somalia. Many Al shabaab members have defected from the group claiming their leadership has become drunk with the blood of Muslims in Somalia. On 8th march 2021 two Al Shabaab AMNIYATS whose job was to carry out assassinations handed themselves over to the Somali army in the lower Shabelle region. “The Amniyat is the veins of the organisation. It is all-powerful. If the Amniyat was destroyed, there would be no al-Shabaab,” says Hussein Sheikh Ali, a former security adviser to the Somali president and director of the Hiraal Institute, a Mogadishu-based think tank.

It is becoming clearer to their own soldiers that there is no future in Al Shabaab, an extremist group that honors not the lives of Muslims. It has become clear that their agenda is not a benevolent one, but one that is Haram and against the truth of Allah the all merciful. As the quran says “lā ḥawla wa-lā quwwata ʾillā bi-llāhi”  There is no might nor power except in God all their evil ways will end in jahanam.
