In a recent report by NACADA, children have picked up alcoholism and drug abuse as a pass time activity. This has been reported to be as a result of poor parenting. Children between the ages of 9 – 15 years find themselves in alcohol and drug dens seeking to close the attention gap left by their parents.
With this kind of behavior already in motion among this youth demography, children find themselves in debt due to the fact that they need to sustain their abusive habits. This behavior results to depression and violence in society, hence the increase in child suicide, recent violent acts in schools and even early pregnancy when it comes to young girls.
With all this in mind, the Somalia-based terror group Al Shabaab, is preying on these helpless children. The kids are lured through the Internet platforms seeking a quick financial fix, that to them seem attractive as they seek drug abusive lifestyles they want to experience.
These kids are recruited and radicalized by the Al-Shabaab and used in terrorist missions across the East African region. The children are also used to radicalize other children in joining the terror group.
As adults in society, it is our duty to be vigilant and good role models to the young. We should observe and be highly active in our kids’ lives, inducting the very best of character behavior that will nurture and develop positivity towards them. After all, children are the future.
