LengaUgaidi na Talanta is an initiative that gives the youth an opportunity to spearhead the fight against terrorism and violent extremism by using their art. The first edition of the LengaUgaidi na Talanta competition was launched in 2017 and has since grown into one of the country’s best Film competition. The competition is held annually and this year we are having the fourth edition which was launched on the 1st of September 2020 and will run until 22nd October 2020.
The past three editions have been extremely successful attracting hundreds of participants. We have received over 1,500 submissions since the launch of the first edition. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the Ministry of Health guidelines on curbing the spread of the pandemic, this year’s competition will be done online, and this includes the launch, adjudication, and even awards presentation.
This year’s competition has several new categories including A ‘Foreign Film’ category which has been brought about by the expanding nature of the competition. We have also included a ‘people’s choice’ award. This is to involve the public in adjudicating. Since the first edition over Ksh.3.5 million worth of prizes have been won. For this year’s competition, there will be prizes worth over Ksh.1 million to be won.
This season’s theme is ‘Youth Responsibility in the fight against terrorism.’ This is the general responsibility of the youth in the fight against terrorism and violent extremism. The youth are encouraged to be a part of the initiative, not just for the money but as a way of creating awareness to the Kenyan public in the fight against terrorism and violent extremism.
