An Al Shabaab commander Abdirahman Jelle has reportedly surrendered to AMISOM authorities alongside 3 other Al-Shabaab fighters, considered to be his subordinates.
According to a report by an AMISOM outpost, the Shabaab commander and his team requested a secret meeting with the authorities where he then surrendered his gun and other assorted weapons. The report further credits his defection to poor management by the Al Shabaab’s top brass, claiming neglect.
The four are expected to collaborate with the authorities in providing intelligence about the group’s operations in the region. His defection comes barely a week after another militant, identified only as ‘Asthman’ turned himself into the authorities in the same region.
Since February 2020, the number of defections from Al Shabaab has significantly increased due to a variety of factors, some of which include wrangles in the group, increased security and surveillance by security forces and most recently, the COVID 19 pandemic.
The latter has especially ravaged regions controlled by the Al Shabaab and has contributed to a number of revolts by locals who decry poor health facilities and a lack of concern for health by the militants.
