From 1st to 7th April 2019, AMISOM Level II Hospital in Dhobley Somalia in partnership with Smile Train and Bancroft Global Development held a week long free surgical camp for Somali locals affected by Cleft lip and Cleft palate deformities where the managed to handle a total of 19 cases.
This medical camp was part of a series of camps that have been held in several parts of Somalia since 2016 at AMISOM Level II hospital in Mogadishu Somalia. Spearheaded by Smile Train, an international children’s charity organization that supports 100% free surgical and comprehensive care for cleft lip and palate patients, the campaign is based on a sustainable model that builds the capacity of local medical practitioners on cleft lip and palate surgeries and comprehensive care.
During the medical camp KDF and Somali Medical practitioners from Dhobley General Hospital were mentored on how to conduct cleft lip and palate surgeries. The ultimate goal is to continuously train and mentor local medical practitioners on cleft lip and palate management until they are able to conduct successful surgeries without supervision.
