15 Al Shabaab Senior Officials Killed In Airstrike

Deadly air raid targeting Al Qaeda linked Al Shabaab has killed at least 15 fighters in the south of Somalia. The air strike hit a house in Hargeisa Yarei area, where nearly 30 Al Shabaab group’s senior officials were meeting.

Sources say that fighter jets carried out an airstrike against Al Shabaab in Middle Juba region, leaving 15 militants dead. Last week, US military carried out 5 strikes against Al Qaeda inspired group’s fighters in central Somalia, killing at least 50 militants.

US military involvement in Somalia has grown since President Donald Trump early in his term approved expanded operations against the Al Shabaab. Dozens of drone attacks followed. Late last year, the military also carried out its first air raid against a small presence of fighters linked to the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) in northern Somalia. The US currently has about 500 military personnel in the Horn of Africa nation.

Al-Shabab was pushed out of the Somali capital, Mogadishu, in recent years but continues to control rural areas in the south and central regions. The al-Qaeda-linked group is fighting to overthrow the UN-backed government and has been carrying bomb and gun attacks for more than a decade.
