Three babies and 2 female caregivers died in Mogadishu after Al Shabaab militants doused their house in kerosene and set it ablaze. Several others were injured as the fire spread through the children’s home
A woman living next door said she heard a car approach the home in the middle of the night and heard the voices of a group of young men. After a few minutes, she heard them shouting “Allahu Akbar”. She peeped through her window and saw flames engulfing the home, followed by a loud explosion.
The young men drove away as children’s screams filled the air. It took the neighbours 5 hours to rescue some children and to put out the fire. Security agencies later confirmed that 3 babies aged between 2 and 6 months had been burnt beyond recognition. They also revealed that the home was established by a foreigner from the United States.
Al Shabaab militants often carry out atrocities on children and establishments owned by Western foreigners in response to the special forces’ operations carried out by the US in Somalia.
