Police have arrested three Al Shabaab militants in Nyeri County, Othaya and another one in Nyeri’s Majengo slum after military intelligence officers clamped down on them.
One of the militants is said to have snuck back to Kenya after he left for Somalia where he is believed to have met Al Shabaab recruiters who then sent him back home to help plan an attack on Kenya.
The three have been on the radar after rumours of an attack on Kenya Medical Training College began spreading. Police reports confirm that members of the public reported on a possible attack on the County hospital as well, pointing out that Kinoru stadium could be a possible target.
Police have identified Majengo and Kangemi estates in Nyeri town as possible hideouts for terrorists. Top security officers said they are monitoring individuals suspected of radicalising and encouraging young people to join terrorist organisations.
Meru, Isiolo, Marsabit, Laikipia, Mandera, Wajir, Nyeri, Kirinyaga and Murang’a counties are believed to be the main terrorist transit routes.
