Puntland has postponed the execution of Al-Shabab prisoners who have already been sentenced to death, an official said.

A security official within Puntland, who asked not to be named, told Puntland Mirror that the Puntland government postponed the execution of Al-Shabab prisoners who have been sentenced to death.

“After a lot of pressure from the international community, the government decided to postpone the execution of Al-Shabab prisoners who were apprehended during the fighting between Puntland forces and Al-Shabab in 2016,” the official said.

The prisoners have been released from prison and moved a household in Garowe to reintegrate into society, according to official.

“In recent, the prisoners have been released from jail and transferred into a house in Garowe town to make special rehabilitation.” The official said.

In June last year, a military court in Garowe had sentenced 43 of Al-Shabab fighters to death penalty. They were arrested during the deadly fighting between Puntland forces and Al-Shabab militants in March of 2016.

In Late 2016, Puntland handed over 26 Al-Shabab prisoners who were under the age of 18 years to Somali government in Mogadishu.
