The face of terror is changing rapidly. While we struggle to reconcile the various forms it is taking extremist groups are being even more barbaric than we could have imagined before. Al-Shabaab, for instance, has decided to include young children in their campaigns. The terrorist organization has been reported to forcefully recruit children and using them to conduct terrorist activities in Southern Somalia. This trend has been confirmed in a recent incident in Bakol Region.
While heavily armed, Alshabaab attacked El Garas village is located some 40 km from Tiyeglow district in Bakol Region. Tiyeglow district commissioner who recounted the horrific incident confirmed the report. According to his account, the armed militia terrorized the villagers and went on to kidnap 60 children. The incident occurred amidst a pool of growing threats against the safety of several rural villages. Al-Shabaab has been intimidating local elders and Islamic leaders to sacrificially avail children in exchange for their safety. As a result, these proceedings have generated international attention. A Human Rights Watch report calls out the terror group for targeting children for their recruitment.
Traditionally, governments were the main primary enemies of most terror groups. However, Al-Shabaab is demonstrating the apparent change in this shameless approach even for an extremist group. Children are essentially innocent neither do they uphold a creed nor are they loyal to any particular religious or political group. Hence, they should not be the target of any terror group whatsoever. It is underhanded to tear children away from their families for whichever cause any group is fighting for. The forced radicalization of young ones through abduction is now forcing kids to flee their homes in attempts to secure their freedom. Therefore, apart from attacking small defenseless villages, Al-Shabaab is using children as frontline fighters and human shields.
The impacts of these cruel acts will likely follow these young ones for the rest of their lives. Al-Shabaab is exposing the malleable minds of kids to extreme violence, potential sexual violence, and inadequate health care. All of these violations of their basic human rights could scar them for life. Also, the events are disrupting education in the area where schools are closed indefinitely. The result is rampant illiteracy in the region, which in turn will hinder current and future developments in the region. Al-Shabaab Underhanded Radicalization Tactics
