The leader of Al Shabaab’s Amniyat unit, responsible for the group’s intelligence, attacks and assassinations in Mogadishu, has been arrested, according to the Somali government.

Minister of Internal Security Mohamed Abukar Islow told journalists that security troops arrested the militants’ commander Abduwahid Khalif Ahmed in an operation carried out in the city’s Bakaro market.

Islow says Ahmed, also known as Isse Tarbuun, played a key role for assassinations in the capital of Mogadishu.

“We want to tell journalists that our special security troops detained a wanted Al Shabaab commander, who is in charge of Mogadishu,” Islow added. Al Shabaab was not immediately reachable for comments to respond to the claim.

Meanwhile on Monday, Somalia’s military court sentenced 29-year-old government soldier Ahmad Aided to death for killing the country’s youngest minister Abbas Abdullahi Sheikh in May.

Abbas, who was the public works minister, was shot dead near the presidential palace in the capital. He had become Somalia’s youngest lawmaker in November after growing up in a refugee camp in Kenya.
